Winter brings cold temperatures, humidity, snow and road salt, which can affect the health and appearance of your dog's coat. Regular and proper care is key to maintaining a healthy and shiny coat, as well as protecting the skin from potential problems. Here are some tips on how to care for your dog's coat during the winter months.

Regular combing

In winter, regular combing is especially important, as it removes dead hair and prevents the formation of knots, which can get wet and irritate the skin. If your dog has long hair, use a comb or brush suitable for his coat type. For short-haired breeds, gentle brushing is also sufficient, which stimulates circulation and removes dirt.

Bathing should be moderate

Do not bathe your dog too often in winter, as this can dry out the skin and coat. When you bathe him, use mild dog-friendly shampoos and make sure to dry him thoroughly. Wet hair can cause hypothermia, so we recommend using a dryer at a low temperature or drying with towels.

Moisture protection

Snow and rain can keep a dog's coat wet for a long time, which can lead to skin irritation or unpleasant odors. After a walk, wipe the dog with a towel and pay special attention to the tummy, paws and the area around the ears. If it's very wet outside, consider using a waterproof dog coat.

Paw care

In winter, paws need extra care, as they are exposed to cold, salt and sand on the roads. Trim the hair between the pads to prevent snow and ice from accumulating, which can cause sores. After a walk, clean the paws and apply a protective cream or wax that prevents drying.

A balanced diet

A healthy coat is a reflection of good nutrition. In winter, the dog's organism can be stressed due to lower temperatures, so make sure that the dog gets a balanced diet with enough omega-3 fatty acids, which stimulate the growth and shine of the coat. If necessary, consult your veterinarian about supplements such as salmon oil or vitamins.

A visit to the dog groomer

If your dog has long hair, take it to a dog groomer before winter. Professional groomers can condition the coat to make it less prone to knotting and easier to maintain through the winter.

Watch for signs of trouble

In winter, pay special attention to your dog's skin and coat. If you notice that your dog itches, licks frequently, or has dandruff, consult your veterinarian. Dry air indoors can dry out the skin, so consider using a humidifier.

By following these tips, your dog will have a healthy, shiny and protected coat even on the coldest days. Regular care is also a great opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and your furry friend!
